On July 3, 2012, our Guild members awoke to the devastating news that our wonderful little shop, donation box, and storage building had been destroyed by fire. The cause was stated as undetermined by the Fire Marshall and deemed a total loss by the insurance company. Our community and thirty Guild members were stunned and in mourning at the loss of our little shop.
We set our shock aside and got busy. MBB offered their full support and we had some insurance coverage. The City of Gig Harbor said they would work with us to rebuild on the same site. The local businesses have helped with fundraisers. Donations poured in from the community and are still being collected at Kitsap Bank. The Gig Harbor Rotary Club asked us, “How can we help?” Their involvement was spearheaded by Richard Pifer, the Gig Harbor Rotary Community Service Chairman. They have been amazing and continue to be amazing. This dedicated group of men and women is truly making it possible for us to rebuild. We daily thank each person and each group who helped or are helping to make our rebuilding possible.
We decide to reopen!
Last August we made the decision to rent retail space and set up a temporary location immediately behind our normal place of business. This is in the Pioneer Square shopping area. Come see us! Many thanks to Ken Tallman, the owner of the former Rexall Drug Store, and to Mike Perrow, the owner of Mixed Goods, for their wonderful support in supplying fixtures for the temporary shop. We were open for business just two months after the fire, once again building our bank account for our annual donation to MBB.
The rebuilding process begins with permits and groundbreaking.
Construction has started!
March and April saw the start of construction. Excavation, footings, concrete, plumbing, even the framing has begun. Come see our plans which are posted in the window of our temporary shop and then walk to the back window to see the actual progress.
